Migraines......?

Migraines are one of those "things" that get people down, and for many - the  migraines keep them down.

Migraines, also known as the "sick headache" affect about 10 percent of the population, it occurs most often for those aged between 20 and 50 and its also more common in women.

Sufferers experience a variety of symptoms and will often know when a migraine is on its way by some common tell tale signs such as:

  • Odd tingling sensations
  • Headache
  • Nausea or feeling upset in the stomach
  • Vomiting
  • Altered vision or impaired sight in some way
  • Throbbing sensations in extremities

Although it is mostly adults who are affected, children even as young as 6 months old have been known to experience migraines. In simple terms a migraine results from a swelling or dilation of blood vessels both inside and outside of the scalp in those with a sensitivity in their blood vessels or vascular system. The result of more blood pumping through the vessels is the throbbing effect - not unlike when you hit your finger with something(a builder missing a nail with his hammer and bashing his finger will know what this is like) and it throbs - a migraine is like this but with it in your head not your finger, not much fun at all.

migraineThere are said to be common triggers, but as with anything to do with the body things can be very complex and as a result, many migraine sufferers are never able to pin down what the exact trigger really is for them as individuals.

Common Triggers:
  • The 4 C's - Cheese, chocolate, citrus fruit, coffee
  • Red wine
  • Tomatoes
  • Fatigue
  • Hunger
  • Constant physical stress
  • Tension and Stress
  • Unpleasant smells
  • The pill
  • Hormonal fluctuations
  • Flickering or bright lights
  • Strong perfumes
  • Excessive Noise
  • Changes in the weather

Migraines-232The thing to be aware of when considering triggers for this type of event is that by removing the trigger, you are not really dealing with the underlying cause of the migraine in the first place. Different triggers at different times may be setting off the body response but if the overall state of the body isn't quite "right", and here I am referring to specific metabolic processes in the body that are constantly present or out of kilter, it is these things that can be the precursor and ideally it is these processes or markers that need to be addressed to really get to the cause. Just removing the trigger may be enough but what we have seen is that as time marches on the trigger(s) may change.

It may be simple things like underlying inflammation that could be measured with a blood test by assessing CRP(C-reactive protein) or it could be blood sugar levels abnormally high or low, once again simple blood tests can be used. These are just a couple of examples and there are potentially many more of these metabolic tests available that could start painting a picture. Removing the triggers is obviously great but if we can dig a little deeper the long term benefits(and relief) could be just what the Dr ordered:)

Quite new research has shown a link between heavy metals, minerals and migraines.

Here again I am reminded of the words of Linus Pauling, PhD. From his work we've long known that excess and deficiencies of any nutrient can cause numerous and severe health problems, especially minerals. His words were, "YOU CAN TRACE EVERY SICKNESS, EVERY DISEASE, AND EVERY AILMENT TO A MINERAL DEFICIENCY."

The researchers found migraine sufferers all had notable deficiencies of certain minerals and they also had significantly higher levels of heavy metals.

The results showed the following:

  • Lead - migraine sufferers had more than twice the level of the healthy test subjects
  • Cadmium - migraine sufferers had four times the level of the healthy test subjects
  • Iron - migraine sufferers had more than twice the level of the healthy test subjects
  • Manganese - migraine sufferers had close to four times the level of the healthy test subjects

As well as the heavy metals here are the common mineral deficiencies found:

  • Copper - 50% - migraine sufferers had less than half the level of the healthy test subjects
  • Magnesium - 28% - healthy test subjects had more than 3 and a half times the level of the migraine sufferers
  • Zinc - less than 5% - here it starts to really start to talk with the healthy test subjects having 24 times the amount of zinc

So consider that, only 5% of the zinc levels and 25% of magnesium - If I were a migraine sufferer I would be getting that checked straight away and boosting my levels with appropriate quality supplementation without hesitation!

These two minerals alone(magnesium and zinc) are absolutely critical in many ways - not just in association with migraines but with general metabolic processes and body function that I feel it is way below the expected standard of care if these basics are not even assessed for migraine sufferers upon presentation.

I have talked about the importance of these minerals in previous articles so many of you will be well aware that aside from those with migraines, a deficiency of these minerals is very widespread and will result in an array of "things" to do with your body that simply won't be right or won't "work".

I see the evidence of mineral deficiencies in my clinic work all the time, and for many of you there would have been a recommendation for you to supplement with some form of mineral or another.

It really is critical, and it is also highly likely that even if you are eating "well"(thats an interesting term eh) there will be a shortfall of some of the basics being supplied from time to time.

So if you are suffering with migraines I suggest you take the time to at least check in with someone who knows about minerals and get this assessed. For our clinical customers we are quickly able to assess whether a magnesium or zinc supplement may be a appropriate by using our advanced QRA testing technique.

Mineral status and overall mineral balance is king! So if you just don't feel right and of course if you suffer migraines get MINERALISED NOW!

Douglas Laboratories Magnesium Glycinate
Magnesium GlycinateThe research in general suggests the same thing, and that is that most of us are not getting enough magnesium from our food. The signs of magnesium deficiency are many, here are a few early signs:

  • loss of appetite,
  • nausea,
  • vomiting,
  • fatigue,
  • tiredness and weakness.
If the magnesium deficiency continues and worsens the symptom picture could include:
  • numbness,
  • tingling,
  • muscle contractions and cramps,
  • seizures (sudden changes in behaviours caused by excessive electrical activity in the brain),
  • increasing anxiety and depression, personality changes,
  • abnormal heart rhythms like heart racing or “skipping beats”,
  • coronary spasms (chest cramping) can occur.
This can all be avoided by appropriately using supplements. From a webinar earlier this year that was hosted by a well known University Professor and a specialist when it comes to mineral supplementation, most of us would benefit from a dose of 300-400mg magnesium daily.

It may sound like a lot, but this is simply an indicator of the state of the general dietary/food sources and the long term benefits of increasing magnesium are significant, so why wait, get onto it now!

Health snippets(International News)

CDC ADVISES DELAYED BREASTFEEDING TO BOOST VACCINE EFFICACY.
Its official, young mothers are being told to stop breast feeding in preference to having vaccinations. Research had found that certain vaccines may not be as effective in children being breast fed.

Breast Feeding-139The researchers from the CDC’s National Centers for Immunization and Respiratory Disease (NCIRD) released a paper arguing that because the immune-boosting effects of breastmilk inhibit the effects of the live oral rotavirus vaccine, nursing mothers should delay breastfeeding their infants.

Great idea - yeah right! It seems that they are coming completely from the wrong angle to me, rather than getting rid of the breast milk to allow the vaccine to work better, they could look at this and understand that the breast milk is in fact doing some clever "anti viral stuff" all on its own. Why stop using it when its doing as nature intended quite nicely.

Its also interesting to note that the researchers compared the breastmilk from mothers in India, South Korea, Vietnam, and the U.S.

From the comparison they saw the Indian mothers had the most potent breastmilk in fighting the vaccine, guess who had the weakest? Did you guess right? U.S. mothers milk had the weakest effect. What does that tell us about the good old Standard American Diet(SAD)?
