Health and Wellbeing Newsletter June 2019

Hello friends,

In this issue:
  • Why is anxiety so common? Part 2.
  • Product highlights from the Website -  www.maximumwellbeing.com
  • Coming Up, FREE gift and Live events!

"Notice that the stiffest tree is most easily cracked, while the bamboo or willow survives by bending with the wind" ....Bruce Lee

We are settling down in the Sunshine Coast, and its living up to its name - really is a beautiful spot.

Let's read on......

Why are so many people struggling with anxiety? (Part 2)

Continued from last month.........

Balance your Gut Bacteria

Anxiety-692Another huge topic that has been a regular talking point in recent years. The science around different strains of bacteria shows some very interesting links to a whole range of health issues that many people thought couldn't possibly be related to our gut microbiome.

Up to date studies have found that the gut is in charge of many things, this includes producing neurotransmitters and once again we are learning loads of interesting facts about neurotransmitters.

The use of antibiotics, various chemical residues in our food and of course chemicals we are exposed to generally through food, air and water and even wifi and EMF's all have the potential to alter the microbiome and interfere with the beneficial bacteria within our gut, these factors can work against our body and its natural serotonin production.

One of the neurotransmitters that is thought to be lacking in anxiety and depression is serotonin.
Having healthy gut bacteria is critical to assist with the production of serotonin.

The age old idea of eating fermented foods may be helpful. The more modern approach of taking probiotics is also a positive way to influence this, I still get a dose daily of either some form of fermented food and/or my daily "InLiven".

Getting some form of naturally occurring probiotics into your system to aid in balancing or rebalancing your gut flora on a regular basis is the prudent thing to do.

Balance Your Thyroid

thyroid diaI have written about our thyroid gland and common problems in the past, and if you took any of that information on board you will remember that a huge percentage of the general population has a thyroid problem, under active or hypo-thyroid conditions affect many women and men. The over active or hyper thyroid condition, while not as common is still a significant factor for many and it is known that an excess amount of thyroid hormone can make us extremely anxious, irritable and on edge. It's commonly attributed to Graves’ disease, but can also occur in the all too common auto-immune condition generally referred to as Hashimoto’s.

In the early stages of Hashimoto’s, thyroid cells are broken down by the auto-immune activity and this results in the release of thyroid hormones into the bloodstream.  While this process is occurring there will be thyroid hormone surges along with wildly swinging moods, eventually as the immune system gets a hold(and in the process damages the thyroid gland) the thyroid levels will begin to drop back to hypothyroidism.

Assessing thyroid anti-bodies in the blood is the way to determine what is happening here.

You know that I am a big fan of appropriate mineral supplementation, and in this situation one of the things that can be incredibly helpful with rapidly reducing the attack on the thyroid gland is good old selenium.

You do need to use adequate amounts, for example one study found that over the course of three months supplementation, thyroid antibodies were reduced by 50 percent. With this in mind the daily dosage most suitable will most likely be between 200-400mcg.

As with anything our body produces, thyroid hormones are one of those things that has an "optimal level" in your body, so for those on some form of thyroid medication due to TSH levels that appear either elevated or suppressed, I suggest you work closely with your Dr to adjust thyroid hormones to get things just right, you will find this time well spent as levels that are too high or too low indicate an imbalance of thyroid hormone levels and have been associated with various symptoms, including anxiety.

Magnesium Supplementation

Mag diasporalNow we are getting back to basics, maybe I should have started with this point as it is still one of our foundational things, minerals and mineral ratios are absolutely essential in everything our body endeavours to do. Do I need to give you a dose of research?

Did I hear you say "yes"? Research does in fact suggest that a magnesium deficiency may be associated with anxiety.

There have been several studies(in fact probably a lot more than we realise) have found feelings of fear and panic can be greatly reduced with an increased magnesium intake.

We know that magnesium plays an important role in the brain, where it helps create strong neurological pathways.

Perhaps even more interesting is the knowledge that our body’s stress response system and all its associated parts - you may see this referred to as the "hypothalamic-pituitary-adrenocortical axis" or HPA - are controlled by magnesium!

This could provide some explanation as to why a magnesium deficiency could lead to increased stress and anxiety when the HPA axis is out of balance. I see this often when I am testing - the poor old adrenals are often just not coping until magnesium is added to the protocol.

Other signs of a magnesium deficiency include headaches, insomnia, constipation, and menstrual cramps.

We really can't leave this one out of the mix and I often recommend using a magnesium supplement to start the day, or at bedtime if you have insomnia or a racing mind that plagues you when you’re trying to fall asleep. The citrate version is almost always my preferred source and is also best if you tend to be constipated as it can have a mild stool softening effect.

The other form on its own that I do use (less often) is magnesium glycinate, more appropriate if you have normal bowel movements or a tendency towards diarrhea and also for those with a genuine concern with blood sugar control(even so my go to for most is the magnesium citrate).

There is some data that suggests for some people, magnesium glycinate can worsen anxiety symptoms, its worth noting but may be largely anecdotal. Obviously if you notice that your anxiety increases after taking magnesium glycinate, then definitely get things checked and try switching to magnesium citrate.

Manage Your Stress Response

Super Adrenal Stress FormulaSo how do we manage stress!!! What I am referring to are the things we can use to give our body a little extra support when under duress, using adaptogenic herbs for example can give important support to the over worked adrenal glands and potentially reduce anxiety.

Tell tale signs that may suggest your adrenals would love some herbal support is if you are easily overwhelmed, annoyed, anxious, or irritated by others. That sense that everything is annoying and importantly you find EVERYONE a total "pain in the butt" and/or demanding.

Sleep is very important when it comes to giving your adrenals a fair break so that is the first thing to work on, but if extra sleep doesn’t solve the problem, or isn’t possible consider another one of my favourite ways to support the adrenals: taking adaptogenic herbs.

An adaptogen is simply a substance that can increase the body’s ability to cope with different types of stress, including physical and emotional stress.

To be considered an adaptogen, a herb must have the following characteristics:

  1. Be non toxic to the patient at normal doses.
  2. Help the entire body cope with stress.
  3. Help the body to return to normal, regardless of how stress is currently affecting the person’s functioning.

The really cool thing about herbs is that they both tone down overactive systems and boost under-active systems in the body, we refer to this as an ability to modulate and herbs are known to help normalise the all important HPA axis.

Examples of adaptogenic herbs that may improve your body’s ability to cope with stress include:

  • Ashwagandha(Indian Ginseng)
  • Oats(Avena Sativa)
  • Rhodiola
  • Reishi mushroom,
  • Ginseng, - Korean(Panax) or Siberian(Eleuthero)
  • Licorice,
  • Maca,
  • Schisandra

When these herbs are combined with the correct vitamins and minerals a significant difference may be felt, and if used appropriately herbs may assist in helping move you back on track to a happier, healthier you.

Learn to practice Mindfulness

More and more people are becoming familiar with the term and it describes being and having an awareness of the present moment, as a good friend says - "being in the very, very now".

Quite simply its' the act of observing our thoughts and feelings, and importantly developing a way of noticing but not  “reacting” to them. When done properly you will be inviting all of your senses to be fully aware of the sounds, sights, smells and feeling of everything in your world and accepting this simply as being.

An import
Mental ant part of the learning is that we alone are the only one that controls our reaction to ANYTHING!

By learning and practicing mindfulness you will be able to recognise scenario's that in the past may have taken you into a full on reaction and change this into an appropriate response - or even better - a lack of response, thereby taking deliberate control of your thoughts, feelings and emotions, a very helpful tool to have in your "tool box".

Tools for achieving mindfulness could include:

  • Yoga
  • Being immersed in Nature
  • Meditation
  • Creating a Vision Board
  • Art - this could be drawing or some other creative skill
  • Listening to music

Essentially, if you can shut down your stressed out, worried brain for just a matter of minutes, there will be many benefits over the long term. I recall a term used by a colleague, we are Human "beings" and not Human "doings" and this encapsulates mindfulness quite nicely - being not doing.

Deal with Past Traumas and Emotions

Anxiety could be the result of past events. Any trauma that isn’t properly processed when it occurs has the potential to mess us around.

It may even be something that for outsiders looking in may appear to be nothing at all - but because of our age or disposition at the time we took it on board a certain way - and believe me when I say that minor "traumas" can often be the things that cause ongoing stress and anxiety over long periods of time, potentially big and small trauma's or lessons for us that are yet to be learnt are simply another form of stress and "toxin".

If this resonates with you I suggest you do some work with a practitioner that has skills in this area.

When I consider an unresolved emotion, or an emotion that is locked in place as a result of some traumatic incident, I find it helpful to compare this to a toxin that your body would like to get rid of, an emotional toxin. The effect over time is the same as harbouring a chemical toxin, it blocks normal energy pathways and causes dysfunction and potentially disease.

So while there are purely physical manifestations of all types of problems such as a broken arm or the flu, there will generally be an emotional component as well. In some cases the emotion is a minor part of problem, but potentially it could be the key that requires unblocking to allow you onto the path of healing.

We all know our whole body is a complex system, and quite simply we can’t ignore our mind and emotions.

There are many tools available to help with "Emotions", my clinical work in this field includes:

  • EFT - Emotional Freedom Technique, EFT, also known as "tapping"
  • ERT - Emotional Repolarisation Technique - a process that quickly identifies "truths" for you to work on
  • Emotion Code - a simple, quick process to clear trapped emotions

If any of these things sounds interesting for you then do reach out for help, thats what we do :)

That concludes part 2 of this rather long article, I hope you have found it helpful and of course if it feels appropriate please share it around. We will be offering some specials for the remainder of the month to complement the article. See Below.
