More tips to use to avoid greenwashing companies,
In this issue:
Yes, we all know what Spring is supposed to mean, and apart from the rain I don't think we can complain of a particularly harsh winter. So here's to a prosperous Spring for you all as we start to "dress with less" for the warmer months of the year. The grass is certainly green at present, as we have seen on our way around the country BUT can we please have a little less rain?! Cheats never prosper - but they can rip you off! Perhaps I am loosing my mind, or maybe just seeing more clearly, who knows? It seems wherever I look there are people, organisations or companies trying to pull the wool over our eyes and we need to be ever vigilant.Whatever the case one thing is for sure - there is no shortage of companies out there who WANT YOUR MONEY and some are prepared to twist anything they can to achieve their goals. I mentioned this briefly last month, but couldn't resist including the following article(apologies to any of you who may have seen this already). Greenwashing and ‘Organic Cheater Brands’ are starting to get their well-deserved comeuppance. Many companies desiring to cash in on the growing organic market have unethically made claims and even developed skin and body care products with the desire to mislead well-meaning, health conscious consumers. Greenwashing takes place when a company advertises a product such as body wash or moisturizer as being organic and it may contain only 1-2% organic ingredients, if that. The rest of the ingredients may be natural and processed with synthetic chemicals, or made out of exclusively synthetic chemicals, including parabens. Since labeling laws aren’t tightly regulated, consumers are easily misled. The Organic Consumers Association has long fought against what it calls “organic cheater brands”. This year at the Expo West Natural Products Expo in Anaheim, California, the OCA staged a very visible public protest to expose what it calls “shampoo products” that are “organic cheaters.” The protest was part of the OCA’s Coming Clean Campaign which continues to expose dishonest or misleading products in the skin care industry. Due in large part to the OCA’s efforts, Whole Foods now says it will enforce honest labeling by taking a closer look at the word “organic” on personal care products. You can read the entire article here: http://www.organicconsumers.org/bodycare/index.cfm. To follow is a summary of the brands that are far from the real thing - some of you will be familiar with many of the brands mentioned and we hope this makes you wonder. According to the Organic Consumers Association, here are names of cheater brands to boycott: • Avalon “Organics” • Desert Essence “Organics” • Earth’s Best “Organic” • Eminence “Organic” (Except a Few w/USDA Seal) • Giovanni “Organic” • Goodstuff “Organics” • Head “Organics” • Jason “Pure, Natural & Organic” • Kiss My Face “Obsessively Organic” • Nature’s Gate “Organics” • Physicians Formula “Organic” Wear • Stella McCartney “100% Organic” Just in case you haven't quite got the message, Miessence® products have never and never will contain synthetic chemicals or use chemical processing of its ingredients. What would you do if you contracted Swine Flu? Keeping the news at home this month, some of you will have seen an interesting report on 60 minutes last month that featured an Otorohanga farmer who had beaten the odds and survived a deadly dose of H1N1 virus that resulted in complications including Leukaemia and "certain death". Here is a letter written by Hilary Butler on the subject, we hope this gives you another ray of hope, strictly for those of you who use their common sense and will not take no for the answer when dealing with the establishment with these types of concerns. New Zealand Medical Authorities continue to ignore a potential cure for Swine Flu. Three H1N1 deaths (a 53 year old man in Waikato hospital, who had no pre-existing health problems, and two Auckland men, 29 and 57), reported on page 5, in this morning’s New Zealand Herald, 20 August 2010, comes just two days after the TV3 60 Minutes documentary called “Living Proof”, which tracked the obstructive responses of these same Auckland and Waikato Hospital ICU specialists, who sat and watched Allan Smith survive what the family had been told was “certain death” from H1N1 and hairy cell leukaemia. The Smith family spoke out on 60 Minutes about their experiences, in the hope that their story will result in this potentially life-saving and safe treatment being initiated as a primary therapy in all hospitals. How many New Zealand families can afford a specialist public health lawyer, to come to a hospital to force doctors to grudgingly administer intravenous vitamin C, instead of turning off life support? Why are the wishes of families not respected, when the only outcome the doctors had to “offer” was death? So often we hear of people with terminal conditions where doctors offer completely untested treatments, on the basis that “it just might work.” (This is the bit that annoyed me and obviously really got up the nose of Allan Smiths family-GB) Why then, the resistance to giving a dying man, intravenous vitamin C? Will New Zealanders continue to die of H1N1 unnecessarily, because the medical profession continues to ignore medical literature in their own data bases, and the evidence in front of their own eyes? These latest deaths in the two hospitals featured in 60 Minutes "Living Proof”, indicate that the medical profession continues to refuse to listen, watch or learn. Why do doctors continue to ignore medical studies conducted four years ago, which showed that vitamin C was the treatment of choice for white-out lung in influenza? Medical literature also shows that when faced with a potential death situation, giving the patient a high dose vitamin C protocol reduces respiratory failure and ventilator-dependence. It would seem that the medical profession also continues to also ignore other medically promising non patented treatments including: N-acetyl cysteine as well as other nutrient mixtures, as well as reviews describing the potential use of vitamin C to reduce illness and death in pandemic influenza. (If we look at some of the work of respected researcher and recipient of 2 Nobel Peace Prizes - Linus Pauling, we will discover that high dose Vitamin C is most likely the most potent anti-viral on the planet!-GB) Farmer Allan Smith’s three month long hospital treatment will have cost the taxpayer a huge sum of money, whereas correctly administered intravenous vitamin C treatment of H1N1 from the start of hospitalisation, would have been a tiny fraction of that cost. 60 Minutes “Living Proof” suggests that had the hospitals used the vitamin C correctly from the start, Mr Smith might have been discharged, completely well, within two weeks. That Mr Smith’s treatment was unnecessarily hindered in such a dramatically obstructive manner as shown on 60 Minutes “Living Proof”, and Campbell Live’s subsequent interview of lawyer Mai Chen, is a travesty of patient’s rights. Most importantly, eight H1N1 deaths after Mr Smith’s survival, could possibly have been prevented had those families been voluntarily offered the option of intravenous Vitamin C treatment. The implications of these issues raised by 60 Minutes “Living Proof” and John Campbell’s subsequent interview, should raise serious questions in the minds of the media, politicians and the public. Written On behalf of many concerned New Zealand citizens, Hilary Butler, 25 Harrisville Road, Tuakau, 2121. And what have we heard in response from the officials in our Hospitals and health system? Absolutely nothing/diddly squat/silence - does that surprise you? SPECIAL SEPTEMBER OFFER:
