“Reality is merely an illusion, albeit a very persistent one." - Albert Einstein.
I decided its time to take our minds off the fact that we are deep into the Winter period and consider some of the amazing, simple, powerful foods that are right there in front of us.
What do we know about this seed?
What health benefits are there hidden in this hard shell?
The humble flax seed, small, hard, brown(or golden for some) and grown in many parts of the globe, including here in New Zealand.
I was probably introduced properly to this little seed back in the days of operating my whole foods store at Bethlehem. During these years I had many customers using this simple product in a variety of ways.
I also recall the book "The Liver Cleansing Diet" by Dr Sandra Cabot who made famous the mixture LSA - of which Linseeds are the "L" in this mixture of linseeds, sunflower seeds and almonds. I also recall going to an Oncology Lecture where once again the humble flaxseed came up with some excellent science backing up its importance and anti-cancer properties.
A famous cancer phd, Dr Johanna Budwig in Europe used flax seed oil as part of her cancer treatment regime successfully for many years. Dr. Budwig was born in Germany in 1908. She passed away in 2003 at the age of 95. She has been referred to as a top European cancer research scientist, biochemist, blood specialist, German pharmacologist, and physicist. Dr. Budwig was a seven-time Nobel Prize nominee.
If you would like to know more about her work go the the Budwig Centre website, or visit perhaps the Cancer Tutor website for an outsiders view.
When conventional cancer medicine fails to produce positive outcomes, bring on the humble flaxseed.
There has been many studies looking at flaxseeds over the years and the element often talked of is the "lignans" present in the seed as it has phytoestrogenic traits. This is just one of the interesting properties of this under-rated seed, if there is a cancer, whether its breast or prostate cancer, consider this seed as your friend. It has been shown that having flax seeds added to a cancer treatment programme may in fact allow a more effective use of a lower dose of chemotherapy.
The result is a better overall outcome with less collateral damage from the drugs side effects.
A very recent study published in the International Journal of Oncology illustrates this point again and adds to the growing recognition that conventional treatments like chemotherapy, taken alone, are failing to produce positive results and that the use of natural substances may be an indispensable way to improve outcomes.
In the study, Italian researchers sought to evaluate the possible synergistic role of an extract of flaxseed in combination with the conventional chemo-drug doxorubicin in a number of breast cancer cell lines.
They also noted that a commonly used cancer drug known as doxorubicin is notorious for its many side effects, and there are dozens of these. The researchers hypothesized that one way around this problem would be to reduce the amount of doxorubicin used by combining it with a safer, more natural compound, this is where the flaxseeds step up.
Researchers showed a phenolic extract of flaxseed oil on its own resulted in a number of chemotherapeutic effects (increase in apoptosis, G0/G1 phase cell cycle, and the activation of signaling and pro‑oxidant pathways).
This latest study looked at the effect of doxorubicin combined with the phenolic extract of flaxseed oil on two different breast cancer cell lines, focusing on what conditions are ideal for using lower doses of doxorubicin. They reported the experiment a success:
“We report the data relating to the ability of this mixture to induce cytotoxicity and apoptosis, cell cycle modification, mitochondrial membrane depolarization and activation of extrinsic and/or intrinsic apoptotic pathway.”
While of course its early days regards real human trials, flaxseed has been subject to extensive research on its chemopreventive and chemotherapeutic properties. Why wouldn't we want to eat this food as a matter of course and gain some of its benefits as a preventative agent?
How should I eat flax seeds - Ground or Whole?
Within the smooth, shiny, hard exterior of the flax seed we have a huge range of important nutritional elements, fatty acids, amino acids and vitamins to mention a few, and the tough shell is designed to keep these nutrients all in pristine condition. Once the seed is ground or crushed it is only a matter of time before these elements will degrade, and oxidised foods become toxic very quickly.
So just as you coffee connoisseurs will grind your coffee beans for fresh coffee, flax seeds should be treated the same, so if you are using ground seeds make them fresh and use them as soon as possible.
The same rule applies to flaxseed oil. The company manufacturing the oil should maintain optimal freshness via nitrogen flushing the container, which will preferably be in non-chemical leaching glass or high quality bpa free plastic. Also, opt for a high lignan form of the oil if/when available because you lose this valuable component of the seed material when you produce oil concentrate.
Flaxseed has one of the highest levels of naturally occurring lignans known, and this is why if you are consuming the oil you may also wish to supplement with whole or ground flaxseed so that you benefit from these highly therapeutic compounds.
As far as whole flaxseed is concerned, make sure that you chew it very well, if your primary objective is to obtain the beneficial nutrients, lignans, and fibre from them.
Also, consider that flaxseed produces a wonderful, soothing mucilaginous gel when soaked in water. You can pre-soak a tablespoon in a glass of water overnight to produce an excellent concoction for constipation, simply drink it in the morning.
Because flaxseed will naturally soak up water, remember not to consume too much dry, whole flaxseed or ground flaxseeds without adequate hydration, as it could be a bit binding – the exact opposite effect that it will naturally have when consumed in the correct manner. So always keep well hydrated, particularly when using whole or ground flaxseeds.
Which is Better? Flaxseed Oil or The Seed?
Of course the important thing here is to understand the seed is itself a whole food, ideally you would have a combination of Flax Oil and flax seeds in your day. However, there are some important things to consider when incorporating either of these forms into your diet:
- Never heat flaxseed oil: All oils rich in monounsaturated and polyunsaturated fatty acids are prone to enhanced oxidation (rancidity) when heated. This means that you would not cook with flaxseed oil, opting for naturally saturated (and therefore more heat stabile) fats like coconut oil or ghee (clarified butter) instead.
- Get creative with Ground flaxseed: Ground Flaxseed is an excellent addition to smoothies or for sprinkling on foods that have a higher glycemic index, e.g. pasta, cereal. The ground flaxseed will slow the breakdown of the starchy carbohydrates and therefore blunt blood sugar spikes and associated highs and lows of insulin. Also, the fibre is excellent for helping to contribute to regularity (it is useful both for going too much and not enough). The key, of course, is to always stay hydrated when using flaxseed, as it can cause significant binding in a dehydrated individual.
- Flaxseed is full of good fats: Keep in mind that flaxseed is a potent source of omega-3 fatty acids, containing a 4:1 ratio of omega 3 to omega 6 fatty acids. This is a great way to balance out the predominant ratios in the Standard Diet, which is so heavy in cheap oils such as corn, canola, soy, all of which have higher levels of omega 6 than omega 3. The Omega 3 EFA's are generally seen as protective and anti-inflammatory while the opposite is said about Omega 6.
How Much Should I Take?
Generally, a tablespoon or two of ground flaxseeds a day is a good dose for ensuring you are getting a physiologically significant amount. The same goes for the oil.
Many people have consumed five tablespoons of meal a day without any harm, another popular use is as an alternative to olive oil as salad dressing (the taste of flaxseed oil is quite subtle and for some is preferred over strong flavoured olive oil).
Everyone will be different, so go with your intuition if you are just experimenting. If you are sick, consult your health practitioner to obtain specific recommendations. Also, listen to your body. If you aren't finding flaxseed agrees with you, then back off on the amount or stop and try an alternative that does work for you.

Product Highlights from www.maximumwellbeing.com
Miessence After Shave Balm.
When you pick up a bottle of a Miessence certified organic product you will find somewhere on the product, a logo from Australian Certified Organic(ACO). To have this label placed on the bottle it means that the product has a verified third party guarantee of authenticity. And in addition it means that every single ingredient in the formula complies with the most stringent organic food standards used across any industry.
The ACO monitors and checks every step of the purchasing of raw ingredients and manufacturing to ensure that we as consumers are getting what we pay for, its the ultimate guarantee for those of us wanting the purest products. The organic certification these products have is for "organic food standards" which is far more strict than the watered down "organic cosmetic standards" that many companies producing skincare may be using.
The Miessence certified organic products are really in a class of their own and I will mention a couple of my favourite products here:
The Shaving Gel and After Shave Balm, obviously products targeted to men and they are a joy to use. I have never been a fan of the thick fluffy foaming products that come in a can and I enjoy a wet shave for the smoothness it creates. The gel allows for a quick, smooth shave and the icing on the top is the super hydrating effect of the After Shave Balm, no need to suffer from razor burn as the first ingredient is organic Aloe Vera, combined with all the other ingredients my skin is left feeling soothed and nourished and the subtle scents from Sandalwood, Patchouli, Lavender and Neroli really do round it off.
If you are going to shop on our dedicated Miessence website and take advantage of the haircare deal this month, you might also like to add something for him as well.
His skin will love you for it, and maybe he will as well :)

Sweden assessment paves the way.
The Swedish authorities seem to have a different way of looking at many things that most "western nations" tend to get stuck on. This time it looks like Swedes are in a better position that us with freedom of choice over vaccines.
Its official - California declares glyphosate a cancer-causing poison
Glyphosate Listed as Known to the State of California to Cause Cancer. Effective July 7, 2017.
Great news for us all - except perhaps shareholders of Monsanto. The pressure has been on Monsanto since the World Health Organisation’s International Agency for Research on Cancer said that it is “probably carcinogenic” in a controversial ruling in 2015. Its controversy is of course a result of Monsantos willingness to do anything BUT accept the science and facts.
Monsanto has already sued the OEHHA in an effort to block the Prop 65 listing, and a court appeal is currently pending (case number F075362 in the Fifth District Court of Appeal).
According to the USRightToKnow group, there are currently 91 lawsuits pending against Monsanto in San Francisco alone, “filed by people alleging that exposure to Roundup herbicide caused them or their loved ones to develop non-Hodgkin lymphoma, and that Monsanto covered up the risks."
