Salt has been used as an important traders currency and is critical for our survival, how good is your salt?
In this issue:
This last period has been another where it seems wherever we look there are some horrific things happening all around. The Gulf of Mexico oil disaster is something none of us who care for the environment want to experience, but of course it has happened. We also have a re-emergence of GE activity, just when you thought our leaders had got the idea that WE DON'T WANT IT, hope you enjoy this newsletter, thanks for being here:) Too much sodium in your meals? There seems to be a lot of confusion over what is good salt, so with the help of an article written by one of our colleagues who knows all about minerals, we are going to put things straight. Two popular sources of so called "healthy salt" are rock salt and sea salt, we are told that they have a more broad range of mineral nutrients than common table salt and are natural and safe. The truth could well be quite different and here are the reasons. Our first example is Sea salt marketed as Celtic salt and is harvested from the French coast as it has been for centuries. Unfortunately the sea off the coast of France has become more and more polluted and of course the resulting toxins end up in the salt, it is a difficult(if not impossible) task to remove the pollutants. It doesn't take much imagination to be able to picture the full range of waste we produce - from pesticides to plastic bags - finally ending up in our oceans either as run off through drains and rivers or deliberate dumping. World Wildlife Fund lists the major Northern Hemisphere pollutants in both the Atlantic and Pacific oceans as follows:
The same is unfortunately true of the Southern Oceans, while not nearly as badly pollutted we definitely have problems. About 3 years ago, PCB toxins were found in the eggs of Antarctic Penguins. This is but one example and unfortunately is not an isolated finding. In recent years we have seen a surge in the popularity of Himalayan rock salt once again in the belief that it is pure. Rock salt is a mined salt subject to water seepage over millenia, so it too is full of contaminants, particularly heavy metals including mercury, lead, cadmium, caesium and thallium. Most of us will be shocked to hear that the efforts to buy a healthy product for the family has been thwarted by a lack of disclosure from those marketing these "healthy alternatives". Generally speaking sea salts should be cleaner than mined salts as heavy metals tend to "fall" out of sea water. However, any toxins within sea water will occur in the salt. For all of the pollution problems with salt, also of great concern is the unbalanced level of sodium. Salt is about 40% sodium and sodium is a primary antagonist of other electrolytes and for those of you who have been reading our newsletters over time will already know the importance of electrolytes. Someone who is already deficient or low in potassium, magnesium or calcium who also uses lots of "salt" will hasten the further depletion of essential trace elements. We commonly hear the complaint of significant cramping episodes and cravings for salt - both overt signs that all is not well with the mineral balance in the body. Another issue with the most popular products is the low levels of iodine. Our NZ health department acknowledges the problem with low iodine in our soil and for this reason approves iodised salt to prevent goiters. You may have even spotted various labels such as one on a Himalayan salt proclaiming "contains iodine", when looking closely the amount shown in the analysis, the level we have noted in one instance was 1.42 parts per million, nothing to run screeming down the street about and certainly not enough to combat a deficiency of this very important element.
So where does that leave us? We have available a product that was developed to combat the problems of too much sodium and too many contaminants in table salt products. Now you can make food better with a liquid preparation known as FortiSalt™!
Added value. Glowing skin has never been easier - or more fun!
Our popular Rose Geranium and Tea Tree Exfoliating Cleansing Bars are now available in reusable, sisal drawstring bags. Now they not only immaculately clean and nourish the skin, they also exfoliate! Cleansing and exfoliating is accomplished in one easy step. Just hang the bag in the shower for quick drying, extending the life of our cold-pressed, virgin coconut oil soaps.Don't be fooled by fancy soaps - I saw a soap/cleansing bar from a new "organic cosmetic" range recently, when checking the ingredient list there was all sorts of "stuff" in this luxurious bar. The Miessence Cleansing bar consists of 2(yes 1 more than 1) ingredients, certified organic Coconut Oil and Certified Organic tea tree oil or Rose Geranium oil depending on which "flavour" you prefer. NOTHING ELSE, just those 2 ingredients. We love it and although it is not the cheapest soap(nor the most expensive) on the rack its wonderful rich lather is sooo goood.
Product Review - Soothing Couperose Gel (broken capillaries/redness) Soothing Couperose Gel.Couperose skin is characterised by the visible presence of bright red capillaries around the nose, cheeks and chin. Couperose occurs because of poor elasticity of the capillary walls. We have even had comments from customers who have applied this formula to varicosities on the lower leg, one lady said she felt it had reduced in size "overnight". Couperose is aggravated by excessive use of hot and cold water on the skin, blushing, alcohol, cigarettes, hot and spicy foods, and sun; anything that causes blood to rush to the face. Miessence Soothing Couperose Gel is a strengthening treatment for sensitive skin with ultra-soothing, organic plant extracts. Fortifying and toning horsechestnut, soothing St. John's wort, calming chamomile, and astringent and toning witch hazel helps to reduce a red blotchy appearance.
