Sore or bleeding gums? The condition of gingivitis is common in varying degrees, if left untreated, gingivitis can develop into gum disease, resulting in damage to surrounding mouth tissue and even causing degeneration of bone. Known as periodontitis, if this gum disease continues, not only could you see a loss of teeth, but this can be the starting point of many other health issues.
Poor oral health in general has long been linked to some of our all too common health conditions such as heart attack, lung disease and stroke.
Tell tale signs that your gums may not be doing too well can be if your gums have become puffy and soft, or changed to a darker colour, if any of these changes occur, then it's likely you have developed gingivitis. Additional symptoms will usually include gums that bleed easily, a film covering mouth tissues, bad breath and receding gums.
The simple practices for oral hygiene are as important as ever to improve gum health, brush regularly with a high-quality toothpaste, consider the use of essential oil or sea salt solution(please don't use the harsh over the counter mouthwash products that have food colouring and antibacterial chemicals-these can increase the risk of throat cancer!) consider instead a combination like the Miessence Toothpaste and mouthwash products on our dedicated Miessence website.
Vitamins C and D greatly reduce the risk of gingivitis.
There have been several studies that have shown a vitamin C deficiency is associated with increased signs of gingivitis. Vitamin C is important for helping maintain healthy blood vessels and may explains why smokers are at greater risk for gum disease since smoking depletes the body of vitamin C. Science suggests, just one cigarette can deplete 25 mg. of vitamin C!
Vitamin D is another essential nutrient associated with decreased risk of gum disease. According to the American Journal of Clinical Nutrition, Boston University researchers looked at National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey data from 6,700 non-smoking subjects of a wide age range.
The people in the group with the highest blood levels of a vitamin D metabolite were less likely to show signs of gingivitis.
One of my long time favourites CoQ10 - Antioxidants and probiotics promote healthy teeth and gums.
I'm sure many of you will be familiar with the coenzyme Q10 (CoQ10), this vital nutrient plays an important role in energy production for every cell in the body, the heart muscle being a very energetic muscle is a big consumer Coq10 is critical for a healthy, strong heart. When it comes to oral health, CoQ10 also has a critical role to play – as an antioxidant – in preventing periodontal and other diseases.
In fact, researchers have shown that dosages of 50 to 75 mg per day can slow advancement of gum disease, providing a natural approach on how to treat gingivitis. It's one of those nutrients that I feel, if you have the resources to afford it, take it every day as it does offer great support and protection.
Clinical cardiologist and author Stephen T. Sinatra, M.D., found that patients showed noticeable improvement in gum health after starting a CoQ10 supplementation regimen for heart disease. And Holistic dentist and author Dr. Victor Zeines, recommends 100 mg of CoQ10 each day.
And last but not least on the list of natural approaches to reducing gingivitis includes the use of probiotics.
Probiotics can take your practice of good oral health a step further by actually altering the mouth’s environment, making it a less desirable place for plaque to develop. Examples of probiotics that have been shown through research to improve the environment of the mouth include Streptococcus salivarius, Lactobacillus salivarius and Bacillus coagulans. These may also help to overcome halitosis.
