Our sun and free radicals.

The last part of November saw such a wide swing in our weather that it prompted me to post a little information relating to our exposure to the elements.

Early November I was lucky enough to to spend  day on Mt Ruapehu. It was an amazing day, clear blue sky and loads of brilliant sunshine, perfect........ as long as you had good protection from the damaging rays from the sun. Even though I was well covered - it was obvious that many people had underestimated the mighty power of our sun. Red, burnt skin means rapid production of the type of free radicals that result in faster ageing of the skin.

The following weekend, after a full week of very warm summer weather I participated in a day of outdoor activity, again. This time it wasn't quite so sunny when the day began, but we all need to remember that a  little cloud cover is not a sign we don't need to cover up( cloud is just NOT the same as applying sunscreen), it still burns and often the cloud cover thins and the sun is blasting through before you apply your protection, all of a sudden it  can be too late!

There are 2 things we need to be aware of here, the first is the obvious damage that is caused to the skin from the suns rays and the second is the damage to other areas, in particular the very small arteries and veins in the eyes. Sunlight has the obvious benefits of things such as Vitamin D, but there is information that associates high lifetime sun exposure with macular degeneration.

The answer is to protect the skin from over exposure with quality sunscreens and also to make sure your anti-oxidant intake is kept optimal.

Most of us are familiar with the sun protection factor (SPF) rating that gives an indication of how effectively a sunscreen protects against UVB radiation.

As an example, an SPF of 10 means you can stay in the sunshine 10 times longer than without protection before you will burn. Shortwave UVB radiation causes most sunburn and sunscreens help shield this type of radiation.

For the sunscreen you can't do better than the Miessence Outdoor Balm (remember this product is independently tested and has an SPF of 29.5!)
